World IP Day at the Australian Taxation Office

Janice Yew | May 17th, 2016

World Intellectual Property Day recently took place on 26 April, so it was rather apt that mdp Director Michael McDonald was invited by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to give a presentation on the topic ‘Intellectual Property in the Modern Economy’ on that same day.

Michael was joined by fellow mdp Director Sarah Gilkes and presented to an enthusiastic crowd of 160 ATO staff on the commercial and legal considerations surrounding intellectual property for Australian businesses, both domestically and internationally.

Michael drew on his 35+ years’ experience in intellectual property and commercial law to provide insight into current issues, including:

  • the strength of intellectual property rights and its impact on intellectual property valuation;
  • the economics of intellectual property in the global economy;
  • how to successfully and strategically expand internationally; and
  • the structural and tax challenges for small-to-medium enterprises operating internationally.

Due to the success of this initial presentation, Michael and Sarah have since been invited (as part of the above mentioned ‘Expert Speaker Series’) to ‘go on tour’, with the next presentation being held at the ATO in Brisbane in July.
